Ancient DVD player finally died yesterday. Happened to be at Sam's Club today for groceries and ran across this Sony DVP-SR101P/BC DVD player for $35. That was a good price IMHO for a device usually used by the grandchildren and the few discs we get from Netflix. Connection took 30 seconds, setup took 30 seconds, and my grandson was watching Shrek III about 10 seconds later! LoL

Features include the usual gamut plus a very nice speed-control which I've never seen on a DVD player (but then I'm not an aficionado so what do I know ha ha). Simply pressing that particular button on the remote allows one to speed up or slow down playback with FULL sound! Really cool. I'm going to like this button for chick flicks! (Shhh ... you didn't hear me say that!) LoL

It's also half the size of the now-deceased DVD player so I recovered some shelf space as well. Sweet.

I'll update this if there are any untoward events but my experience with Sony gear (going back to before the Walkman) has always been excellent. Hopefully this is an aspect of Akio's company that lives on. Ciao.

5SUPER DVD PLAYER FOR THE PRICE - WILL PICK UP CC FROM YOUR TV !!!!Dec 13, 2011
By Betsy Heimbuch
Our Toshiba dvd player gave up and my husband went to Sears and was talked into a Blu Ray dvd player. Well all went well until we tried to put on closed captioning which is a must for my husband. No matter what I tried I could only get subtitles and many dvd's have only closed captioned - Hallmark for example. I called the Blu Ray Player's technical support and was told Blu Ray does not have CC because the HDMI cable will not bring the closed captioning on the tv into the dvd player. Hope you are all following this. This technician suggested I buy another dvd player and hook it up to the tv WITHOUT HDBMI cable using the red, yellow & white cables. So I bought this dvd player - it is small and sets along side the blu ray. Hooked it up in minutes - turned it on - put in a Hallmark dvd - and voila Closed Captioning.

The sound is great and the picture is sharp. For the price this is a very good dvd player and will pick up the Closed Captioning as long as you do not use HDMI cables.

I highly recommend this player especially if you need closed captioning, do not want to spend a lot of money at this point in time, etc. With 2000 dvd's we are not planning on converting to Blu Ray but were told that Blu Ray players would give us better sound and better picture. They do to a point but when you have people speaking in accents etc. it is hard to hear and I have perfect hearing.

So we are very pleased with this player and it works for us.

1For US DVD-s onlyDec 23, 2011

This might be a good entry level play if the only thing you want to play are American DVD-s. Like other players, this one will not play DVD-s with other "region codes." (This is ridiculous in and of itself, but that is a topic for another discussion.) However, Sony went a step further: this player will not play DVD-s with no region codes. That is, even though the DVD manufacturer decided not to put restrictions on where the DVD can be played, Sony decided that it will not let you play foreign DVD-s just in case. That's a nice company philosophy. This is very likely the last Sony product I bought.
